A Substantial Healing

A few years ago, celebrating a friend’s birthday in a noisy restaurant, I realized I could not hear the person across the table. I could barely have a conversation with Bonnie, who was seated next to me. I’d always had perfect hearing. But I was in my mid-forties. I didn’t expect perfect hearing to last forever.

My work as a psychotherapist was quiet, just me and another person in a small room. But I wondered, at the rate I was losing hearing, how long it would be before I had to use hearing aids.

Then I went to a Todd Bentley meeting in Kansas City. He’s a rather wild revivalist who put me off at first. But as I saw many physical miracles, including backs healed and blindness relieved, I began to realize God was present with healing power. When Todd said that God was releasing healing for deafness, I got up and went to the front. My friend, Judy, came up with me. I watched from a few feet away as Todd interviewed a woman who’d been deaf in one ear for many years. He snapped his finger and asked, "Can you hear that?" She practically jumped up and down, saying, "Yes!"

Then Todd began to pray for more deafness healings. Judy put her hands over my ears. I didn’t feel anything. I wasn’t especially full of faith. But I was substantially healed. I don’t think about hearing aids any more.

I don’t recall exactly when I realized the change. What I do remember is going back to that same restaurant to celebrate another birthday the next year. I could easily chat with the person across the table!
